Somerset MaughamBased on Somerset Maugham's novel, this story follows the sensitive, club-footed Philip Carey (Leslie Howard) who gives up his artistic ambitions to enroll in medical school. At a local café, he meets the brash, manipulative, cruel and uneducated Mildred Rogers (Bette Davis), and falls passionately in love with her. When Philip proposes, Mildred declines, and berates him for becoming romantically interested in her. She tells Philip she will be marrying a loud, boorish salesman Emil Miller (Alan Hale) instead. Philip begins to forget Mildred when he falls in love with Norah (Kay Johnson), an attractive and considerate romance writer. But just when it appears that Philip is finding happiness, Mildred returns, pregnant and claiming that Emil has abandoned her. Philip breaks off his relationship with Norah to take care of Mildred. Has he made a mistake? How will all this end? This story is considered by many to be the most tragic romance story ever written! (82 minutes - 1934 - Black & White - 4:3).
