Baby photographer Ronnie Jackson has always wanted to be a private detective like his friend Sam McCloud (Alan Ladd). When McLoud has to go out of town on a case, he leaves Ronnie to mind the office. Then, in walks the beautiful and mysterious Carlotta Montey (Dorothy Lamour). Thinking Ronnie is a real private eye, Carlotta, who is a baroness, hires Ronnie to find her missing husband, who happens to be a baron. Ronnie soon finds himself involved in a murder mystery, and a series of confusing but sinister events take place in a gloomy mansion and a private sanatorium. Cameo appearances by Alan Ladd and Hope partner Bing Crosby just add to the flavor of this film! Not to mention, the ending is a real surprise!
